Felted Frill Purse

Yarn

Materials: (for small purse)
190 yards Worsted Weight Pure Wool Yarn
(Must be pure wool or felting process won’t work)

20 Ft. light weight specialty yarn. (i.e. - Feathers, eye lash, fur...) It must be light weight enough to not sabotage the felting process.
1 set size 13 x 7” Double Pointed Knitting Needles
1 size 13 x 16” Circular Knitting Needles
1 size F Crochet Hook

(Instructions for Small purse written out with adjustments for Large bag given at the end of pattern).

Approximate dimensions after felting:
Small Bag: 7” Wide x 7” High x 1” Deep
Large Bag: 8.5” Wide x 8.5” High x 3.5” Deep

Knitting The Bag:

Cast on 25 stitches on a Double Pointed Knitting Needle.

Knit a garter stitch rectangle of 5 ridges (10 rows).

Knit one more row. Using Double Pointed Needles, pick up around the edge of the rectangle.

Pick up 5 stitches for each short side and 25 stitches at the cast on edge.

Knit in the round with Double Pointed Needles until project is large enough to switch over to circular knitting needles.

Knit 34 rows.

Row 35 - Knit specialty yarn with main yarn.
(You will be knitting with 2 strands, 1 of each type of yarn)

Rows 36, 37 & 38 - Knit with main yarn only.

Row 39 - Repeat row 35

Knit rows 40 through 50 with main yarn only.

Bind off.

Strap:
-Using Size F Crochet Hook, crochet a 10’ chain.

After knitting the bag, secure all loose yarn ends and felt it:
-Fill your washer to its lowest level with hot water and a small amount of dish washing detergent.
-Let the washer agitate on its longest cycle. Check the bag regularly for the amount of felting.
-You may have to reset the washer for more than one cycle.
-When the bag is felted to your satisfaction, spin the water out.
-Remove the bag and refill the washer with hot water again to the same level.
-Agitate the bag on a delicate cycle for a few minutes.
Spin out the water and repeat the process until the water is clear and bag is adequately rinsed.

Finishing:

Shaping the bag: Stretch the bag over a suitable sized form and let it dry completely.

Creating the strap eyelets: Use the point of your needles to form holes in the bag where desired after it is thoroughly dry.

-You should make 8 holes (See diagram below).

-Pull strap through holes and tie off as demonstrated in diagram.

Yarn

For Large purse:

Double the amount of main yarn needed for small purse.

25 feet of any thin strand specialty yarn used.

On size 13 knitting needles (circular and double pointed per above instructions) knit 2 strands yarn together through out, 1 strand worsted weight wool and 1 strand mohair or similer weight wool or wool specialty yarn, per your taste.

If you use 2 strands of worsted weight wool through out, the purse will be another step larger even still.

The possibilities for design with this purse are endless. Use different types of wool and specialty yarn, just make sure that you use 100% wool for the main yarns used through out. And if you use a couple rows of a specialty yarn that is not wool that it be thin of strand so it can “shrink up” with the wool.
