Classic Socks
(My first and favorite knitted sock pattern)

Materials:
4 ounces of Worsted wieght or Sport wieght yarn.
Size 4 or 5 double pointed knitting needles depending on size
of sock you would like to knit. Size 5 will work well with Worsted
Wieght for a man’s heavy sock. Size 4 needles for a ladies or small
man’s sock. You may want to adjust the size of the needle if you
are using sport weight yarn. The same needle size can be used, but
the sock will be lighter.
Cuff :
Cast on 52 sts loosely, divide on 3 needles (18 sts on first
needle, 16 sts on second needle, 18 sts on third needle). Join, being
carefull not to twist stitches. Place marker on needle to mark the
beginning of the round.
Work 1 X 1 (knit 1, purl 1) ribbing for 3 1/2 inches. Last stitch
of cuff increase 1 stitch.
Leg:
Knit each round for stockinette stitch until leg measures
4 inches above the cuff.
Decrease Round:
Knit 2 together, knit to within 3 stitches of end of round, slip 1, knit 1, pass sl st over knit stitch, knit 1.
Mark last stitch for end of round and center back.
Knit 6 rounds even.
Repeat decrease round once; 49 stitches.
Work even until leg measures 7 inches above cuff, end at marker.
Knit first 12 stitches of round, then slip 12 stitches from the third needle to the first needle for the heel (having center back stitch at center of the needle), hold remaing 25 stitches on 2 needles for the instep.
Heel:
Row 1: (wrong side) Slip first stitch as if to purl, purl to the end of the row.
Row 2: (right side) Slip first stitch as if to purl, ( knit 1, slip 1) repeat to the end of the row.
Repeat last two rows until there are 18 rows on heel, ending with row 2.
Turn heel as follows:
(wrong side) slip 1, purl 13, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn the work around. (You will have 7 stitches left on your needle to knit before you turn your work.)
Row 2: slip 1, knit 6, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit 1, turn,
Row 3: slip 1, purl 7, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn.
Row 4: slip 1, knit 8, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit 1, turn.
Row 5: slip 1, purl 9, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn.
Row 6: slip 1, knit 10, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit 1, turn,
Continue to work toward the sides of the heel, having 1 stitch more before each decrease on each row until 15 stitches remain.
Gussets & Foot: With the same heel needle and yarn, pick up and knit 11 stitches on the side of heel; knit 25 stitches of instep to one needle; with the free needle pick up and knit 11 stitches on other side of heel, knit 8 heel stitches to the same neele. You should have 62 stitches total.
Beginning at center of sole there will be 18 stitches on the first needle; 25 stitiches on second (instep) needle and 19 stitches on third needle.
Knit 1 round even.
Decrease round: Knit to within 3 stitchs of end of first needle, knit 2 together, knit 1; Knit across instep needle; on third needle, knit 1, slip one, knit one and pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to end of round. Repeat last two rounds 5 times (12 rows total) until 48 stitches. Knit even until foot measures 2 inches less than desired finished length, allowing those two inches for the toe shaping.
Toe Shaping: Beginning at the center of the sole, place 12 stitches on each of first and third needles; 24 stitches on instep needle.
Beginning at center of sole, knit to within 3 stitches of end of first needle, knit 2 together, knit 1.
On 2nd needle, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to within 3 stitches of end, knit 2 together, knit 1.
On 3rd needle, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, knit to end.
Knit 1 round even.
Repeat last 2 rounds 5 more times (12 rounds total).
Repeat decrease round every round until 12 stitches remain.
Knit 3 stitches of first needle and slip to 3rd needle.
Using Kitchener Stitch, graft sole and instep stitches together.
Make second sock the same.
